Advanced Visualization (VR/VE) RAC The Advanced Visualization Lab (AVL) provides expert consulting, research support, educational opportunities, and hardware and software resources for scientific visualization, virtual reality, high-end computer graphics, and visual tele-collaboration.  The AVL engages in projects and partnerships with researchers, educators, and artists from all IU departments and campuses. Bioinformatics Support RAC Bioinformatics is computationally intensive biology, particularly in the areas of genomics, cell biology and molecular biology. Classroom Technology TLIT A single point of contact is provided for faculty who want to use technology in their teaching environments.  This includes providing and maintaining equipment installed in classrooms, resolving operational problems, and facility planning.  In addition, mobile technology can be scheduled and delivered to classrooms as requested by faculty and staff.  These services are provided by UITS on the Indianapolis campus.  They are provided through a partnership between UITS and Instructional Support Services on the Bloomington campus.    
     Classroom Technology (Fixed) TLIT Faculty support services include training, passwords, ermergency assistance, troubleshooting, room checks, online documentation, e-mail notification of changes/problems.  Classroom equipment support includes acquisition, installation, maintenance, and replacement on a life cycle schedule.  System designs are continually reviewed for efficiency and effectiveness.      Classroom Technology (Mobile) TLIT A wide range of mobile equipment may be scheduled and delivered for use in classroom instructional activities, including laptops, video/data projectors, video conferencing equipment, televisions, VCRs, DVDs, slide projectors, audio equipment, etc.  Training and emergency support are provided.

Collaborative Technologies TELC UITS develops and implements information technology to support distributed collaboration, including in such areas as desktop videoconferencing, digital video streaming, multipoint data conferencing, and Web-based access to application sharing, emphasizing shared Web browsing, shared presentation viewing and whiteboarding.  UITS also develops, implements, and supports visualization technologies for advanced immersive collaboration environments. Common File System (Electronic Lockers) RAC The Common File System (CFS) service provides a space for faculty, staff and  students to store their data that is easy to access from any networked machine from home or on campus.  CFS also provides sufficient capacity and performance  to meet the needs of this diverse user base. Faculty, students, and staff can  store their electronic documents and personally owned software, store their e-mail, launch specific applications, and get access to networked information  via their CFS space. Conferencing TLIT Conferencing services enable collaboration among members of the university community. Much of the work being done to deliver conferencing services focuses on providing alternatives for academic collaboration. As this service develops, the university will benefit from whiteboard conferencing and desktop video conferencing capabilities. In addition to exchanging messages, faculty, staff, and students will collaborate with colleagues and workgroups on campus and at other universities. Computer based "white board" facilities will provide group audio/graphic conferencing, and videoconferencing will remove the geographic barriers between campuses and other remote sites.  This is a Bloomington service only.  David Goodrum N/A

Data Archival/Massive Data Storage RAC Faculty and staff have a need for a reliable, central archival system for low cost storage of large data sets and data-intensive applications. With these services, researchers can move selected files to, and retrieve files from a networked file archiving storage facility that provides them with extended storage capacity. This facility also provides them with protection from inadvertent destruction of primary copies of files maintained in local file spaces.  Anurag Shankar Anurag Shankar

Database Administration  UIS This service is intended to provide and maintain  institutional databases for Indiana University.  The primary consumers of this service are UITS development teams who utilize the database environment to deliver enterprise information systems including student, financial, library, HR and decision support.   Integrity, consistency, and the utility of institutional data, and excellent database performance characterize the environment.   This is service is located in Bloomington, but serves all campuses.   Mike Egolf Lena Woods

Database/Data Management Support  TLIT Faculty, staff, and students who use desktop and server-based database applications, geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing software, image management, spreadsheets, and web development tools are provided with consulting and other support services by the Data Management Support group (DMS). The support services include training, site license administration, distribution of software, technical support point of contact, hosting geographical data, operation of servers, and creation and maintenance of instructional environments related to teaching about systems development and database technology.  Subservices include 1) Database Support with DMS maintaining Oracle servers and associated application development software on UITS central systems for teaching and learning.  DMS is also the technical support focus for departmental system administrators and database administrators for Microsoft and Oracle databases.  Consulting is provided to departments who are seeking to build an information system to meet teaching and learning, research, or administrative needs.  This includes business and departmental system analysis, relational database design, and support for building the database. 2) Web Database Service and Development Support with DMS providing a central Microsoft based UITS resource for departments who need to provide database access via the Web but do not wish to operate their own Web server or database server.  This fee-based service includes Microsoft's Internet Information Server (IIS) and SQL Server as well as Macromedia's ColdFusion and all of the common production environment utilities of UITS central machine services.  The service also includes a development environment with appropriate development tools.  High-level technical support for desktop tools including but not limited to Microsoft's Access and Excel is also provided. 3) GIS support consists of administering site licenses for Clark Labs' Idrisi, Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI) products, ERDAS Imagine, LizardTech image management software, and Manifold System 5.0.  This encompasses distributing GIS and remote sensing software included under each license, providing the technical contact with the spftware vendors for resolving complicated problems encountered by local support providers (LSPs), and supporting software administrators for the Student Technology Centers.  These services are available to users on all campuses.   Mike Halla N/A

Decision Support Services (Information Access) UIS Decision makers throughout the university need access to useful data resources to assist in their responsibilities. The decision support environment is one in which individuals can use their desktop tools to manipulate institutional data.  It is a "point and click" interface and users do not have to know programming languages to gather information from institutional data structures and several pre-processed data sets.      
     Data Warehouse (Decision Support Systems) UIS The Data Warehouse service has two components: a database component and a web application (Indiana University Information Environment).  They both facilitate users access to the information they need to fulfill their day-to-day responsibilities.      Information Center UIS The university community has access to an information retrieval environment on the mainframe.  They use the FOCUS query language that is well suited to their needs and usage patterns, and permits them to use their desktop tools to manipulate institutional data.  DSS is responsible for the support of the Information Center on the mainframe.

Departmental Computing Support Delivery TLIT UITS staff work with local support providers and are committed to providing technology support and resources to departmental Local Support Providers so they may achieve the technology goals of their units.  Services available to Local Support Providers include workstation and server consulting; access to LSP Lab resources; technical training and certification; access to on-line technical tools and resources; and reserved software distribution.

     Education/Certification (EdCert) Program TLIT An educaiton program specifically geared toward the IT professional at IU.  The instructors are Microsoft Certified to teach the Microsoft Certified Courseware.  The only fee charged is for the courseware.    
     Hardware/Software Acquisition Consulting TLIT Consulting services for departments who wish advice on the purchase of hardware or software for Windows and Macintosh. Mark Lynch

Digital Library Technologies RAC The Digital Library Program is a collaborative effort of the IU Libraries, UITS/OVPIT, the School of Library and Information Science, and the School of Informatics dedicated to the production and maintenance of a wide range of high-quality networked information resources for scholars and students at IU and elsewhere. UITS provides support for technology and staffing (in partnership with the Libraries) to support creation of digital collections and develop and maintain an infrastructure for their ongoing support and delivery.  While based in Bloomington, services are provided to all campuses.      Research RAC UITS and the Digital Library Program are engaged in a number of research activities and national initiatives related to digital libraries, in partnership with faculty from various IU schools and departments.  Currently, the major activity is the Variations2 Digital Music Library project, which aims to establish a digital library testbed system for music and conduct research and development in system architecture, metadata standards, network services, music instruction, usability, HCI, and intellectual property.    
     Service Delivery RAC The Digital Library Program provides access to a number of digital collections (including image, text, and audio formats). Some collections are provided primarily to IU students and faculty in support of instruction, while others have a broader user base of students, researchers, and the general public at IU and beyond.

Education Program/IT Training and Education TLIT Technology training is available through STEPS (formerly known as Jumpstart/TIPS) classes specifically for students; PROSTEPS classes specifically geared to faculty and staff.  In addition, the Education Program also provides self-study materials, certifications for local support providers and other university support staff.

Electronic Text Resources RAC A humanities computing research facility is available in the IUB Main Library with the Library Electronic Text Resource Service as its core. Personnel assist humanities faculty and students in learning to use electronic editions of scholarly texts in new approaches to teaching, learning, and research.  This service is also extended to the IUPUI campus from Bloomington.

Financial & Procurement Systems UIS Indiana University's responsibility center management environment necessitates access to appropriate sources of information for financial and managerial decision-making. The Financial Information System (FIS) enhances administrative effectiveness by giving administrators, account managers, faculty, and staff fast, efficient access to institutional data resources. Likewise, The Online Purchasing System (TOPS) exists to assist faculty, staff, and students in the purchase and payment of goods and Services.

High Performance Computing RAC Faculty, staff and students have access to dedicated computing resources and software tools, including state-of-the-art supercomputers, parallel programming languages and subroutine libraries. The HPC Support Group provides training and consulting support for research and instruction using these facilities on all of IU's campuses, online documentation, and site licenses.

Media Services TLIT Media Services offers a wide variety of audio and video services to faculty and students.  These services include course production, traditional video/audio production services and multimedia production services.  The group can provide services for one session for a whole semester.  A valued service to students is taping lectures and making them available in the library for reference.   This service is offered only on the IUPUI campus.

     Email: Exchange TELC Provides rich collaboration environment including mail, scheduling, electronic forms, and groupware.    
     Email: Unix TELC IMAP access to email is provided by the Shakespeare email servers on the Bloomington campus and the Jewel email servers on the IUPUI campus. These systems are for students, faculty and staff and allow standard IMAP clients to access an individual's
