Common File
System (Electronic Lockers) |
RAC |
The Common File
System (CFS) service provides a space for faculty, staff
and students
to store their data that is easy to access from any
networked machine from home or on campus.
CFS also provides sufficient capacity and performance
to meet the needs of this diverse user base.
Faculty, students, and staff can store their electronic documents and personally
owned software, store their e-mail, launch specific
applications, and get access to networked information
via their CFS space. UITS helps customers prevent
accidental loss of information
by performing regular backups on the CFS. |

Conferencing |
TLIT |
Conferencing
services enable collaboration among members of the university
community. Much of the work being done to deliver conferencing
services focuses on providing alternatives for academic
collaboration. As this service develops, the university
will benefit from whiteboard conferencing and desktop
video conferencing capabilities. In addition to exchanging
messages, faculty, staff, and students will collaborate
with colleagues and workgroups on campus and at other
universities. Computer based "white board"
facilities will provide group audio/graphic conferencing,
and videoconferencing will remove the geographic barriers
between campuses and other remote sites. This is a Bloomington service only. |

Data Archival/Massive
Data Storage |
RAC |
Faculty
and staff have a need for a reliable, central archival
system for low cost storage of large data sets and data-intensive
applications. With these services, researchers can move
selected files to, and retrieve files from a networked
file archiving storage facility that provides them with
extended storage capacity. This facility also provides
them with protection from inadvertent destruction of
primary copies of files maintained in local file spaces. |

Database/Data
Management Support |
TLIT |
Faculty, staff,
and students who use desktop and server-based database
applications, geographic information systems (GIS),
remote sensing software, image management, spreadsheets,
and web development tools are provided with consulting
and other support services by the Data Management Support
group (DMS). The support services include training,
site license administration, distribution of software,
technical support point of contact, hosting geographical
data, operation of servers, and creation and maintenance
of instructional environments related to teaching about
systems development and database technology.
Subservices include 1) Database Support with
DMS maintaining Oracle servers and associated application
development software on UITS central systems for teaching
and learning. DMS
is also the technical support focus for departmental
system administrators and database administrators for
Microsoft and Oracle databases. Consulting is provided to departments who
are seeking to build an information system to meet teaching
and learning, research, or administrative needs.
This includes business and departmental system
analysis, relational database design, and support for
building the database. 2) Web Database Service and Development
Support with DMS providing a central Microsoft based
UITS resource for departments who need to provide database
access via the Web but do not wish to operate their
own Web server or database server. This fee-based service includes Microsoft's
Internet Information Server (IIS) and SQL Server as
well as Macromedia's ColdFusion and all of the common
production environment utilities of UITS central machine
services. The
service also includes a development environment with
appropriate development tools.
High-level technical support for desktop tools
including but not limited to Microsoft's Access and
Excel is also provided. 3) GIS support consists of administering
site licenses for Clark Labs' Idrisi, Environmental
Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI) products, ERDAS
Imagine, LizardTech image management software, and Manifold
System 5.0. This
encompasses distributing GIS and remote sensing software
included under each license, providing the technical
contact with the spftware vendors for resolving complicated
problems encountered by local support providers (LSPs),
and supporting software administrators for the Student
Technology Centers. These services are available to users on all
campuses. |
